What E222 Means
E222 means the meat probe in the lower cavity of a Bosch double oven is reading above the allowable limit, and that cavity stops heating until the probe is removed. Bosch's first suggested check is whether the probe was plugged in but left sitting in the cavity rather than inserted into food, because a probe in open oven air reaches cavity temperature within minutes.

- Probe element failed and reading above range
- Damaged probe lead or contaminated lower receptacle
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Take the probe out of the lower socket and out of the oven, using an oven glove since it will be hot, and start the bake again without it. If the cavity heats normally, the probe or the way it was used explains everything.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The probe has by definition reached an over-range temperature, so it needs handling with protection rather than bare hands.
- Bosch treats use pattern as the first check, so dismantling an oven before that is ruled out wastes a visit.
- Probe resistance is judged against a published figure, not against what feels plausible.
- If the probe tests good, the fault is in the receptacle wiring inside the lower cavity wall.
