What E216 Means

E216 is the lower cavity's meat probe fault on a Bosch double wall oven. Bosch describes the mechanism as the hot wire shorting to ground, with the probe connection seen to come and go several times. The probe for that cavity is disabled while the oven carries on working, and the fault clears after a control reset. Dirty receptacle contacts and a connector shorting against cavity metal are the suggested causes.

Common Causes of E216

  • Carbonised residue in the lower cavity probe receptacle
  • Probe connector shorting against cavity metalwork
  • Probe lead damaged so the connection makes and breaks

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

With the oven cold, unplug the probe and look into the lower cavity's socket for food residue or carbonised deposit, cleaning gently if you find any. Lower cavities catch more spillage, so the socket is more likely to be contaminated than the upper one.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Anything past the visible contacts means working inside the cavity liner of the harder-to-reach half of the appliance.
  • Bosch notes the standard probe assembly is part of the control module, so a receptacle fault can reach the shared board.
  • A socket that sits in a cavity used for roasting is hot long after cooking, and cleaning it warm risks a burn.
  • Trying the same probe in the other cavity's socket is a useful test but not one to do while either cavity is hot.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E216 FAQ

Often yes, and that is a useful test. A probe that works upstairs and not downstairs points at the lower receptacle rather than the probe.

Yes. Bosch states the probe is disabled but the oven continues to operate, so only probe cooking in that cavity is lost.
