What E050 Means
E050 applies to Bosch ranges fitted with a rotary encoder behind a control knob. The encoder has developed a short to its supply rail and held it for more than ten seconds, which the control reads as an input that cannot be real. Bosch's documented action for this row is to replace the rotary encoder switch.

Turn the knob slowly through its range and watch the display. A setting that jumps straight to one extreme and stays there matches a shorted encoder, and that observation is useful when you book the visit.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- On a range the knob shaft passes through the fascia just above the cooking surface, which is why grease finds its way in; cleaning around it does not reach the encoder behind.
- Pulling a knob off without the right technique takes the shaft with it and turns an encoder job into a panel job.
- A damaged connector produces the same symptom as a failed encoder, and only one of them is fixed by the part.
- On a gas range the encoder sits alongside the valve manifold, so shut off the appliance gas valve before the fascia is opened.
