A microwave that won’t start at all can mean anything from a tripped breaker to a genuine internal fault. Here’s a safe checklist to work through before calling for service.
Step 1: Check the Door Latch
Microwaves won’t run at all if the door isn’t detected as fully closed. Open and firmly close the door, checking for any visible obstruction or debris around the latch. This relates to the E3 door system error if a code is displayed.
Step 2: Check Power at the Source
Confirm the breaker for the microwave’s circuit hasn’t tripped, and if it’s a plug-in unit, that the outlet itself is working with another device.
Step 3: Look for a Displayed Code
If the display is on but nothing happens when you start a cycle, check for an error code. E2 and ER11 are both fairly common and point to specific, repairable faults.
Step 4: Stop If You Notice Anything Unusual
If you notice a burning smell, scorch marks, or the unit gets unusually hot even when off, stop troubleshooting and call immediately rather than continuing to test it.
