If there’s one maintenance task that determines how long your built-in Bosch coffee machine lasts, it’s descaling. Mineral buildup from hard water is the leading cause of the heating and brewing faults we see, including Error 5.
How Often, Really?
As a general guideline: every 2-3 months in hard-water areas (much of Texas, Arizona, and parts of the Southwest and Midwest), and every 3-4 months in softer-water regions. Your machine’s built-in descaling indicator is calibrated to your actual usage and is generally a reliable prompt to follow.
Use the Machine’s Automatic Program
Most Bosch built-in machines have a dedicated descaling program that walks you through the process with a Bosch-approved descaling solution. Avoid generic descaling products not rated for your specific model, as they can sometimes cause more harm than the scale buildup itself.
Signs You’re Overdue
Slower brewing, lukewarm coffee, unusually loud operation, or a persistent “CALC” prompt even after a recent cycle are all signs it’s time. If Error 5 or Error 8 appears, a descale alone likely won’t fix it — book a coffee machine repair visit.
Not Confident Doing This Yourself?
A factory-trained technician can diagnose and fix it safely, usually same-day.
