How to Clean Your Bosch Dryer Vent to Prevent Overheating

Vent maintenance is the most important safety task for any dryer — here's a realistic maintenance schedule and what to check.

Dryer vent maintenance isn’t just about drying performance — restricted airflow is one of the leading causes of home dryer fires nationally. Here’s how to stay ahead of it.

Clean the Lint Screen Every Load

This is the easiest and most important habit: remove visible lint from the screen before every single load, not just when it looks full. A thin film of lint that’s hard to see can still meaningfully restrict airflow.

Inspect the Exterior Vent Quarterly

Go outside and check that the exterior vent flap opens freely when the dryer is running. A flap that doesn’t open, or opens only partially, is a strong sign of a blockage further down the line.

Schedule a Full Vent Cleaning Annually

Lint accumulates inside the duct run itself over time, well beyond what the lint screen catches. We recommend a full vent cleaning at least once a year for most households — more often for longer vent runs or heavy laundry use. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent the E12 overheating error code from recurring.

Warning Signs Between Cleanings

Clothes taking longer than usual to dry, the outside of the dryer feeling unusually hot, or a burning smell are all signs you shouldn’t wait for the annual cleaning — book a dryer inspection right away.
