What Er:21 Means
Er:21 on a Bosch front-load washer means the machine has detected excessive foam. Bosch's documented cause is short and direct: the wrong detergent or too much of it. The Vision manual's entire remedy is to consult the customer about dosing. Foam interferes with the drain pump and with the pressure sensing, which is why the control notices and reacts.
Common Causes of Er:21
- Detergent not formulated for high-efficiency front-load machines
- Too much detergent for the load size and water hardness
- Detergent residue built up in the drum over many cycles
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch to a detergent marked for high-efficiency or front-load machines and use less of it, around half what you would use in a top-loader. Run an empty rinse cycle to clear the residue already in the drum.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Heavy foam prevents the drain pump moving water efficiently, so chasing this as a pump fault leads to replacing a healthy part.
- Foam also distorts the pressure reading, which can produce level-related codes that look like separate faults.
- Running more cycles with the same detergent simply builds more residue in the drum and the outer tub.
- Detergent residue in a front-loader also feeds the smell people later blame on the door seal.
