What E:12 Means
E:12 is Bosch's limescale code. Mineral deposit has built up on the heat pump heater to the point where heat no longer reaches the water properly, so the machine runs through the programme without getting hot. The two actions Bosch lists are to descale the machine and then to check the water hardness and confirm the built-in softener is set for it, because a softener set too low is what allows the scale to form again.

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Run a descaling cycle with a product made for dishwashers, then look up your water hardness and set the machine's softener level to match it using the procedure in your use and care manual. In hard-water areas this is maintenance, not a one-off repair.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Descaling that only shifts the loose deposit leaves the hard layer on the element, and the code comes back within a few weeks looking like a new fault.
- Scale thick enough to log a code has usually also reached the sump and the spray arm feed, which needs more than a single cleaning cycle.
- Strong descaling chemicals used at the wrong concentration attack the seals and the stainless tub they are meant to clean.
- If descaling and a corrected softener setting do not clear it, the heater has been damaged underneath the deposit and measuring that is technician work.
