What F3 Means
F3 on a Bosch French door refrigerator means a freezer defrost cycle ended on its fifty-minute time limit instead of ending because the coil reached temperature. In other words the defrost ran its full allowance and the ice was still there. The manual's check point is the resistance of the freezer defrost heater, which is built into the evaporator assembly.
Common Causes of F3
- Freezer defrost heater failed open
- Defrost thermostat or fuse in that circuit open
- Heater harness damaged at the evaporator
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Look at the back wall of the freezer compartment for a solid sheet of frost rather than a light coating, and clear the compartment of anything blocking the return air path. Do not apply heat to melt it.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The heater is bonded into the evaporator assembly, so testing it means removing the rear freezer panel with refrigerant tubing directly behind it.
- A hair dryer or heat gun aimed at the frost melts the liner and can damage the very tubing that keeps the appliance working.
- The heater circuit is live during a defrost cycle, so any measurement starts with the appliance fully isolated.
- Frost that keeps returning will eventually block airflow entirely, so the fresh food side usually fails next if this is left.
